When Joe and Catherine got married, many of you will recall the unique wedding ceremony- Joe had written into the proceedings a scene from the princess bride in which a bishop- played by yours truly- begins an old style wedding, and then is stopped so that Joe and Catherine could be married according to vows which reflected their love and beliefs- not just some staid old tradition to be adhered to. It was fun and edifying- typical Joe!

Joe was nice enough to drive down to Iowa with me for an interview for medical school....and bring along his homemade bean dip. Unfortunately I didn't catch on to the joke until that night when I kept waking up to bean farts coming from across the room! Thankfully after yelling "stop farting, I can't sleep!" he giggled and was quiet the rest of the night. Typical Joe!

I'll never forget the time when Joe invited me to hop that freight train on the Soo Line and head west. He was the best hobo ever. I was only 12, but I remember the clack of the tracks, the fresh breeze through the box car, eating bean dip, watching the sun set across the prairie, listening to Joe play sad songs on his harmonica, getting my first taste of Boone's Farm (and certainly not my last!), getting rousted at 3 am by the marshal, the night sticks, the welts. And to think we made it back by sunrise and no one ever knew! Until now, that it. Thanks, Joe. You are a fine brother and a great mentor to me.
